I love judges of photographic competitions. So often they know what they want to see before they get to see what is presented to them. Rare is the judge who attempts to understand what the photographer was thinking. In the case of the above image, the judge surveyed it for an abnormally long 20 seconds. And then said, puzzlingly, "Is this really supposed to be a competition photo?" Click on the thumbnail and inspect it enlarged. It is little more than what we often call a "selective focus" image -- not too different than what we generally do with flowers or portraits. In focus is a sign on a transparent door: "Seasonal Exhibitions," it says. Behind that, out of focus, are people looking at a floral exhibit. Most onlookers get the joke immediately: The sign announces that the soft-focused observers are the exhibit." |
