Note on MMA Grate and its detail view: You are viewing a fabric that hung as a shade in front of a window looking to the west out of the modern art wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The fabric seems to have been woven from a cord that is partially transparent or translucent. As a result, the display of darks and lights we see are not directly from the view outside, but, rather, from the surface transmissions of that view as reflected from or projected through the shade. The detail shows the reflections off the grate as if they are threads woven through the twill weave. |
