BERNARD SALOMON'S
EMBLEMS FOR THE TRIUMPHS OF PETRARCH.

To the reader:

This article is presented in a draft format. It was written in the late 1970s and functionally abandoned in the early 1980s. Although rough in places, not proofread and currently unillustrated, it is being offered for reading on line to anyone who is interested in the topic.

The text includes notes to myself and notes written to me (marginalia) by those who graciously looked over the draft in my behalf. In the spirit of publicly posting scientific papers, the author welcomes comments and suggestions, including critiques. If you would like your comments to be posted on line in their appropriate places, please so indicate.

Format Notes:

1.     The reader may note that I've placed documentary references and notes within this paper's narrative structure. Because this is essentially a draft of an unfinished paper, it seemed advisable not to use standard note and footnote placements and makes it less of a chore to edit, add and delete citations and related matter.

2.     Frequently cited quotations are repeated in the text instead of their first location cited. Because this is an "on-line" paper and not published, it was thought that not having to jump backwards to locate a commonly cited passage would make reading less cumbersome (than it already is).
